How to Post Spotify Songs with Sound to Your Instagram Story

3.37KViews

For years, sharing music from Spotify to Instagram Stories came with a key limitation: users could only post a static card displaying the album art, song title, and artist name—with no audio. To include sound, listeners had to use Instagram’s native music feature instead of sharing directly from Spotify.

This week, that changes. Spotify has rolled out a new integration that allows users to share audio snippets directly to their Instagram Stories. Here’s how it works:

  • In the Spotify app, tap the share button on any song.

  • Select the “Stories” option (with the Instagram logo).

  • Instagram will automatically open with a new Story featuring the song’s album art as the background—with audio included.

To drive engagement, the shared Story also includes an interactive sticker that lets viewers tap to open the song directly in their own Spotify app.

A Long-Awaited Feature Finally Arrives

This update addresses a highly requested feature among Spotify users. As far back as April 2021, posts on Spotify’s subreddit expressed demand for audio-enabled sharing to Instagram Stories. The integration is a welcome upgrade for millions who use both platforms regularly.

Beyond improving user experience, this move strengthens Spotify’s presence in the social sharing ecosystem and supports user acquisition through deeper ties with Meta’s platforms.

Real-Time Sharing Expands to Instagram Notes

The integration doesn’t stop at Stories. Spotify also now supports sharing to Instagram Notes—short, text-based status messages visible at the top of the Direct Message inbox.

Users can connect their accounts as follows:

  • Create a new Note in Instagram.

  • Tap the music icon.

  • Select “Link Spotify” and follow the authentication steps.

Once connected, the Note will update automatically with whatever the user is listening to on Spotify in real time. If no music is playing, it will display the next song played within 30 minutes. Users can also manually share a specific song to Notes using the same share menu in Spotify.

Who Really Wants to Share Everything

While seamless sharing benefits users who want to highlight music discoveries, it also raises questions about privacy and oversharing.

Not every user may feel comfortable broadcasting their entire listening history in real time—especially those with eclectic tastes or who listen to context-specific songs. Automatic sharing features should be used thoughtfully, as constant visibility into listening habits may blur the line between personal enjoyment and public performance.

Despite these considerations, the new integration marks a significant step toward more immersive social-music experiences and reflects the growing convergence between streaming and social platforms.
